Account security and you.

#1 by Mattmeck1 » Sun Mar 27, 2011 5:58 pm

First off let me quote the TOS.
Exchanging accounts, donation items, or characters is not allowed. You are solely responsible for your account. If your account has been banned because it was being used by someone else, you will not be unbanned. Characters that are deleted are gone for good, and cannot be restored. We will not help you in any way if it was done by accident or not.

We have noticed a major increase in stolen accounts over the last few weeks. In almost every case it was because of trading, selling, or sharing accounts.

There are two rules we follow.

VIP members have a verified e-mail that we know belongs to them, the owner of a VIP account is the person that purchased the VIP points.

Regular users have no verified e-mail, the owner of the account is whoever has it.

I do not understand why people would trust someone they met online and have known for a whole week, but they do.

Do not buy, sell, trade or share accounts, you will be ripped off. I am not joking, over 50 cases in the last two weeks.

This is an "old issue" but we got over this coz the user "Chy" just made a new account instead, just asking what about accounts that where "never shared, traded or sold" but got hacked like "Chy's" account she never traded, shared or sold her account to anyone even to me but she did got hacked and someone used her account without her knowledge or her permission will it get banned ? Even thou its sad to let go that account if it was banned due to this reason, its probably better coz its a violation.

Thank you and we still support this server.

There is no account named Chy, and there is only 1 character with that name, and the account is not banned.

How can we tell if someone was hacked or shared the account? Half the time someone claimed their account was hacked and the hacker did it really were not hacked because their IP was the only one used.

I told Myriad to ask the staff at the next meeting to think about improving account security and he pretty much told me gtfo. Looks like it wasn't such a bad idea after all :)?
Never mind what haters say ignore em' 'till they fade away.

Dont give out your account info... There is your account security.

There is nothing, not a thing that Eternal WoW can do to stop this from happening.

What? You're not supposed to naively and blindly trust a fellow stranger with your password? I thought, you know, that this was the happy love circle with only 'em cool people you can trust.

I had short conversation yesterday with the guy who wanted to trade my 9M warrior for 9M paladin "with some donor items". I just told him "No." and then he offered other 6M acc. I just /ignore him... Last thing I want is to lose character that I've put so many time and Vote Tokens ;)
That's unbelievable to me that some people loosing their accounts that way...

Um, I think so. Eternal staff can't be responsible for user stupidity.

Yes I corrected a spelling mistake you made and you flew off the handle about it and told me you didn't care about my idea and turned your whispers off.

I would say they got what they deserved.. Players here don't use their little brain. If they can't follow simple instruction from ToS, they 'otta get themselves banned.

I would like to get some clarification. Are you saying 1 or 2 or both?
1. Our account is our responsibility, right? Therefore if our sharer hack or insult GM and get ban and so it's our fault.
2. Or are you saying that if you share account and the sharer did nothing wrong, then we will ban you if you are sharing. Anti-sharing rule?

It's a problem if/when it becomes a problem, if you know what I'm saying. If he never steals your account then it's not a huge deal. It's against our ToS. We're not going to ban you for it or anything, but you're treading unsafe territory and we cannot help you if something bad happens, which is why we highly recommend people don't do it, and have added that to our ToS.
If you do share an account against our wishes, you are accepting a host of issues... The account will no longer really belong to one person, but we will treat it like a single entity. If you're friend does something to get the account banned, it doesn't matter if you didn't do it yourself. If the account gets 'hacked', not our issue.

We have to wash our hands of this type of issue as it is completely avoidable and self-created by users. If we start getting involved again in these matters, it becomes a huge time sink like it used to be, preventing our staff from tending to matters that users have that they did NOT create themselves.

We get all kinds of issues that have no easy answers, like:
1) Original owner lets his 'friend' or brother use the account. 'friend' gets it banned.
2) Original owner lets his 'friend' use the account. Original owner becomes inactive. Friend assumes full ownership over time. Original owner comes back after a long break, finds his account password changed and is out of touch with his 'friend'.
3) Original owner donates $2. 'friend' donates $50. The two go separate ways. Who's account should this be?

No easy answers, and resolving these situations properly would involve us setting up a judge/jury scenario. This is not the best use of our small, available volunteer time to the community.

Just my 2 cents.
The universe is run by the complex interweaving of three elements: energy, matter, and enlightened self-interest.

Cyph3r is making a valid point.
The responsibility of sharing or not sharing your account falls entirely in your hands. The reason it is against our ToS is because of security issues such as these. It's the same idea as labeling a game or a movie with 18+, nobody can stop you from playing/watching it if you're below 18, but it's strongly recommended that you don't. If you however decide to watch the movie/play the game, you're ultimately and solely responsible for all possible consequences.

My advice is: NEVER share your account with ANYONE.
"When making a statement, never rule out the possibility of the truth being the exact opposite."
