Enhancing Security

#1 by HeXagon » Fri Dec 03, 2010 10:36 am

Here at Eternal we are always trying to keep ahead of the cheaters, hackers, and other mischievous people out there. We also want our community to keep ahead of these people too as a collaborative effort helps more than anything else!

We would also like to remind the community of a few steps that can be taken to prevent thefts of accounts:

  • Don't share your password with anyone, EVEN Eternal-WoW! staff.
  • Don't donate to anyone directly or allow anyone to donate for you! This could put your account at risk of being banned if they charge-back the donation.
  • Don't share your account for obvious reasons. It puts your account at risk!
  • Don't use the same password for everything. Use different passwords for different sites.
  • Don't click a link sent to you in a PM. If you must, make sure to check the link very carefully. It may initially look like a URL to our site, but could link you to a malicious site.
  • Don't buy or sell an account on Eternal-WoW! This compromises the security of the account and the original owner may try any method available to get it back!

  • Do report people asking for account information in-game.
  • Do keep your password secret and safe.
  • Do keep anti-virus up to date.
  • Do use only the official launcher.

We hope that these tips will help keep our community safe. We are always open to ideas and improvements that we can make. If you have any ideas for improving security. Please feel free to share them in this thread.

What if we were to inform you that for example I would like to purchase an item for a friend as a present of some sort, would it be allowed then?

We are trying to workout a gifting system for this exact situation. The current situation that often presents itsself is as follows:

  1. Person A wants to buy person B a gift.
  2. Person B gives person A login details to thier account (problem #1)
  3. Person A donates on behalf of person B
  4. Person A decides to chargeback the donation. (problem #2)

Problem #1 is obvious, we need to find a way to provide links so people can donate for eachother without revealing account details. Which leads me to problem #2

Problem #2. Who gets punished when the donation gets charged back? The Person A, B, or both?

The problem with only punishing Person A is that people could use this to steal from us by creating multiple fake accounts, gifting to the real account, and charging back on the fake accounts and only the fake accounts get banned.

The problem with punishing person B is that it is not necessarily fair to this person because he or she has just been screwed out of an account since the whole account is banned.

The problem with punishing both is that this creates 2x the trouble for our staff in sorting out the issue. It's a long and complicated process to allow people to donate for each other and make sure that everyone is happy.

We have had several scams come through here that had this exact problem. Person A donated on behalf of a dozen people and got in-game gear in return. Person A charged back all of those and kept the items he got since he never donated on his account. Thus the dozen people got banned because we have rules in place against account sharing and against this for precisely this reason. Abuse of the system.

Alright I understand your point and it does make sense. I can't tell you that certain people won't do that because I mean who can you trust right? Until you have the gift system to work, what if person A comes on vent for example to tell a repersenitive (like a GM or a Donor Admin) that he would like to donate an item to person B. Then he donates the item for person B, you'll know who to ban is person A donates the item and well you know overcharges it back. That way, Person B doesn't get screwed (other than obviously taking the item back I'm pretty sure) and Person A gets banned (or warning, or whatever you want to punish them by) for donating to the server than taking back the money. Could that be a temp solution until you get a "Gift" system to work because at one point in time I want to buy an item for my friend and well I can't because of that rule right?

As long as you have an established good history, we can probably do it. No guarantees though.

Run a check to db /played times and require over a day or two, as well as 25+ posts on the forum. I don't think people are going to want to make multiple accounts to achieve that. ;)

Half the people you see agreeing with each other... are the same person with multiple accounts. Some people have 10+ accounts and do entire threads with just them responding to themselves.

I guess you have a point about the threads, but can't you see IP's on posts? Perhaps an idea would be to look at major companies and see how they do things such as this, somewhere must have a viable solution!
