Here's the short version: Redemption lag issues are gone, login server delays of today are fixed, and Eternal and Remorse got a random speed/latency improvement of about 15-30%. Also server in-game time corrected. Enjoy
Ok, for the masochists among you, here's the long version:
Redemption was among the realms (also Exile and Ruin), that got a big upgrade documented in this thread yesterday:
- 1x - 6 Core - Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5650 @ 2.67GHz (Board has another empty socket available for quick expansion)
- 8x - 15K RPM (6Gbps) 300GB SAS Hard Drives (RAID 6) (Space for another 6 drives available for quick expansion)
- 24GB DDR3 1333 ECC RAM (24GB) (Space for another 24GB of ram for quick expansion)
- 1x - DELL H700 RAID CARD (HUGE HDD PERFORMANCE BOOST!)
Yes, that's pretty nasty indeed.
One problem, though. We moved over these realms and the next day during peak population hours found out Redemption was still lagging, just less. Also the login server was now seriously borked. We noticed the CPU usage was much higher than before, and this is on a much more powerful box. WTF right?
After awhile we determined that there was no login server issue at all, but that Redemption's problems were actually causing the login server issues. Communication between them was super slow. But why? After a few hours of trying just about everything, I tried reverting some compilation flags that we had changed during the move. Boom! That was it! CPU usage dropped in half, lag was gone. What's more, as expected, the login server issues were now gone. Great!
One more thing. These new compilation flags we started using on Redemption that were 'borked'... We started using them because they were what Eternal and Remorse have been using for awhile and they're fine right? Apparently, wrong... So Greg and I changed the compile flags on Eternal and Remorse as well and they're CPU usage dropped in half too. All along those realms have had the same Redemption lag issue of today, just on a smaller scale because they're population is smaller!
What does this mean? Eternal and Remorse should be noticeably speedier now. Don't be surprised to see a 15-30% drop in latency in game, your spells to be snappier, etc.
What else, Cyph3r? Ok, ok. I was told that realm times in game were off by about 20 minutes, so I fixed it. Also, I went a step further and setup a job to auto sync them daily. Overkill? Sure. Eternal Quality'ish? Certainly. Did this in fact crash a couple realms due to the change and also mess up spell timers for 15 minutes? Unfortunately, unpredicted side effect.
Ok already, anything else? We had some network issues for about 20 minutes right about the time I posted this - bad coincidental timing, but they are gone now.
Cheers!
Thanks Greg for helping me with the Redemption issue today!
